To create a workplace environment where everyone can work comfortably.
It is said that LGBT individuals make up about 3-10% of the population in Japan. This means that in any workplace with 20 or more people, there is bound to be at least one LGBT individual. This is roughly the same percentage as left-handed people or people with blood type AB. This shows that LGBT individuals are much more common than many people imagine.
However, while awareness of the term "LGBT" is increasing, the reality is that relatively few people truly understand it.
Zensho Holdings held an LGBT awareness seminar as part of its efforts to enhance workplace diversity and create a workplace environment where people from all walks of life can thrive.
Our guest speaker was Yuji Kato from the NPO Rainbow Diversity, which supports the creation of workplaces where everyone, including LGBTQ+ individuals, can work comfortably. He gave a lecture titled "Thinking about Diversity from an LGBTQ+ Perspective."
The speaker shared insights into the social challenges and discriminatory behaviors faced by LGBT individuals, as well as examples of initiatives by government agencies and other companies, highlighting what LGBT individuals need in the workplace.
One insightful point made regarding what restaurants can do to accommodate LGBTQ+ customers was, "It's important to keep in mind that there are always people who identify as LGBTQ+ around us. When greeting customers in a restaurant, for example, it's important to think about how they would feel comfortable being treated, rather than judging them by their appearance as 'male' or 'female'."
It is important for each individual to proactively think about and understand LGBT issues so that we do not hurt others, such as colleagues, subordinates, or customers, with careless or unintentional remarks.
Zensho Group employs approximately 120,000 people.
We will continue to develop a workplace environment that is inclusive and comfortable for employees from diverse backgrounds, not just LGBTQ+ individuals.
