In the coffee-producing regions of the Republic of Uganda, where abundant nature stretches as far as the eye can see, many children commute to primary school every morning from settlements scattered throughout the mountains.
The journey can take over three hours for children, and many children commute to and from school before dawn or after sunset. Furthermore, the dark mountain paths are fraught with dangers such as kidnapping. For this reason, over 70 girls and their families had repeatedly requested to stay overnight at the school. However, the converted classrooms could only accommodate 15 children, leaving many girls to make the daily, dangerous journey back and forth.
Therefore, the producers' cooperative and Zensho agreed to use social development costs to construct a dormitory next to the elementary school's classroom building.
The children helped carry mattresses and other items, and the accommodation facility, which was completed in January 2022, was equipped with 40 bunk beds, allowing 80 people to stretch out and rest.
Furthermore, having teachers on duty in shifts allows female students to feel more secure during their school days.
Zensho will continue to work with producers to create an environment where children living in production areas can continue to learn in a healthy learning environment.
