A long-awaited library has opened in Kenya!

In May 2017, a library was completed on the grounds of a primary and secondary school in central Kenya, and employees of Zensho Holdings were invited to the opening ceremony.

This library houses over 1,500 books across various genres, including social sciences, natural sciences, history, and stories, and has desks and chairs for 50 people to study at. Furthermore, a computer room has also been created. The library is open not only to children but also to local residents, allowing many people to learn. Because there was no library in this area before, and the nearest one was dozens of kilometers away, the opening of this library was greatly welcomed by the local residents.

At the library's opening ceremony, an employee gave a speech to the children, saying, "Please study hard in this library, enjoy reading, and spend lots of time here."

The children expressed their gratitude, saying, "Thank you for giving us a place where we can grow. The pleasant atmosphere of the library helps us concentrate on our studies and I think it will lead to good results."

This library was built with social development costs from Zensho Fair Trade *.

* social development costs... This refers to the portion of the product price that is used to improve the lives of producers and other related purposes.

Social development support in Kenya

In Kenya, we have been practicing fair trade for tea since 2009.

The first thing we did was build a daycare center for people working in factories and farms. Even a slight increase in working hours led to higher incomes for producers.

We have also introduced foreign object removal equipment for use in the factory. Removing foreign objects not only ensures safety but also contributes to improving quality.

In addition, we implemented a project to improve the nutrition of dairy producers by raising and breeding dairy cows.
