In the coffee-producing region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Zensho engages in fair trade, a cholera outbreak was occurring. In March 2022, social development costs were used as an emergency measure against this cholera outbreak.
The support provided using social development costs included: ① the establishment of emergency temporary hospital wards, ② the supply of much-needed medical supplies, medicines, and food, and ③ the disinfection of water sources that were the source of the infection.
Replenishing medical supplies and medicines that were in short supply.
Thanks to these emergency measures, we were able to treat 128 cholera patients, including infants, in four settlements surrounding the coffee-producing region, and prevent further spread of the infection.
Zensho is engaged in initiatives aimed at promoting the economic independence of producers through fair trade.
Furthermore, in times of emergency such as the current outbreak of infectious diseases, we will continue to provide support to protect the lives of people living in those regions, working together with producers.
